Monsters Index

LEGEND
- WEAPONS: Each monster box contains data on how many hits it takes to kill it with every weapon in the game.  The Grenade Launcher has three numbers, which indicate its three ammo types: grenades (green), fire (red), and acid (yellow).  Note that the numbers can greatly be affected by range and randomness.  N/A means weapons not yet available.
- ENEMY ATTACKS: The monster's attacks are catalogued by range (close, mid, and far).  A
light attack kills you in 9 or more hits; a medium attack kills you in 6 - 8 hits; a heavy attack kills you in 3 - 5 hits; a critical attack in only 1 - 2 hits.
- NOISES: Monsters make distinctive sounds; listen so you'll know if they're near.
- COLOR CODES:
Normal monsters (green); bosses (red); special enemies (orange)

Regarding the funky scanned pics:
Due to some error with my friend's hand-scanner (we couldn't find the ding dong calibration disk), so the pictures scanned here look all "fudged" up.  Please spare me humiliation and send in only pics that could improve my site graphically and not send in any complaints that my pics are crappy.

Those damnable black birds!!!
CROW
While crows are surprisingly easy (fun, too!) to hit with the Handgun or Submachine gun, especially with auto-targeting on, the best strategy is to simply run past them.  If you slow down they may be able to trap you with their "rapid fire" pecks, allowing the light damage to add up.  Better to conserve ammo and run.

Would you be my neighbor?
ZOMBIE
Zombies come in a variety of flavors in Resident Evil 2.   There are eight zombie "types" in the game as depicted on the right.   Zombies that start out standing will grab you, lunge for your feet, or occasionally vomit.  Those that start out crawling can only lunge for your feet.  When you're in open spaces and you don't have to fight, their sluggish speed makes them easy to evade.   When you're in a confined space, try to use the handgun to conserve more precious types of ammo, but in close quarters you may need to pull out a Shotgun, Bow Gun or Magnum for a quick finish.  Aim up with the shotgun for a decap, or mid to blow out their guts (occasionally leaving the torso alive to pursue the attack).

The pooches!
CERBERUS
It's possible to run past pooches, but you'll need to be an expert at evasion tactics.  Single dogs are easy to get into handgun locks, but multiple pooches may require more extreme measures, like the Shotgun.  A well-aimed point-blank Bow Gun shot is good for a one-shot kill.  Learn to distinguish between "hurt" and "dead" yelps

Lovable Tamagotchi Arachnids!.... Don't ask!
WEB-SPINNER
These arachnids look nasty and act the part, but it's almost never necessary to fight them.  Evade when possible, but watch carefully for the occasional acid spit if you get within close range or they get above you.  When you do need to fight, their large size makes them an easy hit with the Shotgun or Bow Gun.

Maximum Carnage Licker!
LICKER
If you're low on ammo or want to conserve ammo, run.  If not, use the Shotgun or a more powerful weapon, which can blow the Licker onto its back.   This will give you the opportunity to land free hit(s) as they recover.
- CLOSE ATTACKS: ground slice (light), tongue whip (light)

Green Licker is MORE POWERFUL!
LICKER-B
Later in the game you'll meet a differently-colored version of the Licker.  These special lickers are almost exactly the same as the normal Licker, only they take more hits (in general) to kill.  Note that if you have the anti-B.O.W. gas on, their power is severely reduced.

Big Sexy Mama Moth!!
MOTH
These guys have a lot of stamina, but aren't as dangerous as you'd think.  Most of their attacks are limited to close combat, so use your strongest weapon for a quick dispatch from afar.  For Leon, the custom Shotgun is a top choice.  For Claire, Incendiary Grenades.

Raccoon's finest Maggots! Yummy yum yum!

4 cockroaches means death?!
COCKROACH
You'll encounter these pesky creatures in the wind tunnel.  If four or more can cling to you at once, you'll die instantly.  Otherwise, their biting attacks are harmless.  You can kill them with any weapon, step on them, or (safest of all) simply run past them without fighting.

Meet Plantman!
PLANT
The long range attack these guys have is fast, hits a wide area, and is poisonous, making plants particularly dangerous.  Luckily they have a serious weakness to fire, so have Leon rush 'em with the Flame Thrower (they usually seem too stunned to fight back when you try this).  For Claire, it's all about Incendiary Grenades!  Remember everyone, save the trees, or this thing here will be our future ruler!

Mutation 1 batter up!
MUTATION ONE
As long as you have a gun and you're fairly proficient at running, this guy is a snap, but be aware that the third hit of his slow pole strike combo can kill you in one hit, so if he hits you once, get up and run quickly.  Since he swings his pole wildly in his death throes, always make sure your final hit occurs at a distance.

Mutation 2 and his children!
MUTATION TWO
Use a fairly powerful weapon on this beast.  If encroached by his children, wiggle the pad 'til they drop.  Use Claire's Acid Rounds with the Launcher for an easy kill, or normal rounds to hurt both him and the huggers.  For Leon, it's gotta be the Magnum.  However, another good weapon that both Claire and Leon could use against this monster is the Sub Machine Gun, where all you need to do is unload the leads upon him and occasionally tweak the aim downward to bring his children back the their maker.

Giant Alligator in the sewer. You sure this is not New York?
ALLIGATOR
Your most important strategy is to hit him while he turns the corners, and never stop when he's within a straight charge of you.  If you do get trapped, he can kill you in one chomp.  No matter how many times you hit him, the Alligator only dies in the final screen, so have some ammo for when you draw him there.
- CLOSE ATTACKS: chomp (heavy, but critical in the corner)
-
APPEARS: 2nd mission
- NOTE: There's a special way to kill him listed in the HOT SECRETS section.

Mutation 3 1/2 and his nasty four arms!
MUTATION THREE 1/2
Dodge and shoot him.  You must avoid his combo at all costs, so keep an eye on his arms.  If he walks forward with all four arms up, he is going to try it.  If you avoid the first hit of the combo, he will not follow through with the rest of it.

The easiest boss all around, Mutation 4 (first form)!
MUTATION FOUR (1st form)
Basically a less aggressive version of Mutation Three 1/2.  Back up while unloading into his abdomen.  This boss isn't too tough in this form.  (NOTE: Leon's Flame Thrower works extremely well on this form, as it stuns him between hits, giving him no opening to counter attack!)  Save your best ammo for his more dangerous second form.

Mutation 4 (2nd form) is something to be afraid of.
MUTATION FOUR (2nd form)
Seek refuge in a corner of the room and nail him as he runs around you.  Or, just run around while firing in his direction.  Targeting him from off-screen is very effective, if you're skilled at that trick.  You often have to manually aim up to hit him when he's jumping around.  Anticipate his jumps and don't get caught.

FINAL MUTATION
When he first appears, turn around and run to the top right corner of the screen.   Then turn around and unload with your best weapon.  When he dies, don't get too close or his flailing could take you with him.  Then sit back and get ready for an amazing ending!

TYRANT-103
1st/2nd/4th/5th/6th fights

Keep your distance and crank his hide full of hot lead.  Don't let him get too close.  Be sure to refer to the weapon chart below!  While you can run away from him, it's often better to kill him to pick up some hot ammo.  (His 6th appearance is exclusive to Leon.)

BRAD VICKERS
Brad Vickers is a special, super powered zombie for those with true skill.   Your best strategy for an immediate kill is to trick him into lunging for you so you can smash his head.  If you want to use lead to kill him, go grab the Shotgun, come back, and aim at his head for a 1-shot decap.
